Birth, marriage & death registers

Birth, marriage, and death records form the basic source for genealogal research. The Catholic church was originally given the responsibility for maintaining these vital records. Following the issue of the Patent of Tolerance in 1781, Evangelical and Jewish congregations were allowed to record the vital records for their congregants. Civil registers were allowed starting in the late 1800s. In 1949, the authority for maintaining the vital records was transferred to the civil authorities. Since this theme deserves the highest attention, we created a separate section for VITAL RECORDS. Click on the following links to open sections dedicated to particular records.
